Whether you prefer relaxing on the beach and soaking up the rays or touring natural landmarks such as the Pamukkale salt mounds, there’s something on offer for everyone. The ancient citadel, with four miles of walls overlooking the beautiful azure of the Mediterranean Sea, was built in the 13th century and is a must-see during any visit to the city. The Damlatas Cave is the perfect place to cool down from the heat and is filled with stalactites and stalagmites that are up to 15,000 years old. A boat trip to the Green Canyon is perfect for those who love the great outdoors. Nestled within the holy land of the Taurus Mountains, you can take in the breathtaking natural scenery while taking a dip in the clear waters.

While staying in Alanya you’ll no doubt want to sample the rich and varied Turkish Mediterranean cuisine on offer. One of the richest cuisines in the world, it reflects the prosperity of the former Ottoman Empire that spread over vast areas of land. Turkish breakfast generally consists of foodstuffs such as bread, olives, cured meats, cheeses, tomatoes and jams. At lunch, kebab is a common popular dish. The kebab is cooked by placing steak slices on skewers, ready to be served. It can be eaten as part of a sit-down meal with rice or bread. Other popular foods include meatballs, Turkish pizza and pita. Dinner often begins with starters that include things such as hummus, ezme (a dish made of tomatoes and peppers), haydari (a yoghurt dip), Tzatziki and imambayildi, a stuffed aubergine dish. Popular desserts include famous favourites such as baklava and Antalya’s burned ice cream.

Getting around in Alanya needn’t be problematic. With extensive public transport systems and road networks, it’s possible to get just about anywhere without too much difficulty. The Dolmuş buses or shared taxis are a popular mode of transport and operate over fixed routes. The route is displayed behind the windscreen on signboards. In some cities, the dolmuş is only permitted to pick up and drop off passengers at designated stops. The world dolmuş comes from the Turkish word for “stuffed” - a reference to the fact that the small taxis only depart from a stop when are near full capacity. The standard bus networks stick predominantly to the main roads and stations. Vehicle hire is also a possible option, with prices averaging at around €40 per day. The nearest airport to Alanya is Antalya, which is located 110 kilometres to the west.
