City breaks to Dresden
Set on the banks of the River Elbe Dresden is one German city that will not fail to impress its visitors. With cheap hostel rooms and budget accommodation Dresden is a top city break destination. Despite suffering unprecedented Allied Bombing during the final stages of World War II the Saxon capital has retained its character and charm. The Old City that lies to the left of the Elbe boasts fabulous Renaissance and Baroque architecture much of which has now been fully restored. At its centre the Frauenkirche or The Church of Our Lady attracts thousands of visitors a day to see its restored marble interior. The best way to see the city is by foot and in summer locals and tourists alike hang out on the banks of the river with a Weissbier. The Christmas markets or Weihnachtsmarkt are not to be missed and serve up a healthy slice of traditional Lebkuchen to wash down with a Gluhwein as well as handicrafts and winter ware from the local area. On the right bank of the river the New Town is the place to head for a more eclectic taste of Dresden with vegan cafes and bars and pubs nestled in amongst artist studios and student accommodation.
