Düsseldorf is one of Germany’s global cities. Located north of
Cologne and
Bonn, the city is an important international business and financial centre. It is the capital of the state of North Rine-Westphalia and is only 60km from the Dutch border. Unlike many German towns and cities, Düsseldorf does not have any famous landmarks or sights on quite the same level as other German towns. It lacks nearby Cologne’s impressive cathedral or Hamburg’s beautiful city hall, but that’s not to say the city is not a worthwhile place to visit as there is plenty to see and some fantastic events to attend. Düsseldorf is home to the
Espirt Arena, a multifunctional stadium that hosts sporting events, music concerts and in 2011 the Eurovision Song Contest! You’ll find plenty of hotels in Düsseldorf and the city is ideal for a city break. Things to do in Düsseldorf
What is there do see and do in Düsseldorf? Located on the River Rhine, there are plenty of paths and walkways along the river where it is nice to take a stroll. Düsseldorf’s
Altstadt (old town) is the beautiful heart of the city and most of it is pedestrianised. The city is famous for having the ‘
longest bar in the world’ – not exactly a bar but a 1km square area of the Altstadt that has over 260 bars! Beer drinking is a must do in Düsseldorf and the city has its own beer – ‘
altbier’. There are many old and authentic bars where you can try a glass or two of Alt – try the
Füchschen,
Schumacher or
Schlüssel bars.
We’d also recommend you visit
Königsallee, the main boulevard in the city. Along this tree lined avenue you’ll find some interesting shops and a beautiful canal dividing the street in two. Known locally as the Kö, the area has an exclusive feel yet is still nice to walk around. Check out the
Kö Galerie, a shopping mall with over 130 shops. There’s lots of pavement cafes so sit yourself down and do some people watching!
If you’d like to see Düsseldorf from the air there’s no need to take a plane! The
Rhine Tower (Rheinturm) is a TV tower and observation deck towering over the city. It costs only 4 euros to go to the top and the tower is a short walk from the old town – you can’t miss it! There is a nice bar and coffee shop at the top where you can relax and enjoy the stunning views.
Seeing Düsseldorf by boat is a nice activity when the weather is good. Boat tours are fairly frequent and last an hour. You will get to see all the important sights along the river including the baroque palaces and parts of the old town. There are some very impressive examples of modern architecture at
Medienhafen and some of the world’s most famous architects . The most famous building at this once derelict harbourside is

Getting Around
Düsseldorf International Airport is located just over 4 miles north of the city. It is Germany’s third largest airport with fast links to the city centre. Over 350 trains daily stop at Düsseldorf Airport Station and it’s a 15 minutes journey into the city centre. Getting around Düsseldorf is straightforward. The city’s formidable
Rheinbahn network of buses, trains and underground Metro handles a huge amount of passengers every day. The old town area of the city is just three minutes from Düsseldorf Central Station. We suggest you purchase a

Cologne, or Köln, is located to the south of Düsseldorf and it takes under an hour to travel between the two.
