City breaks to Lima
Lima is the capital city of Peru and is located in the centre of the country on a desert coast that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Lima was founded by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535 and known as the “city of kings” it soon became the most important city in Peru. It is home to the oldest university in the world that was founded in 1551. Steeped in history from past Andean cultures such as the Chavin, the Incas and the Moche, Lima is an interesting place to take a city break whilst on your South American travels. A tour of the city’s churches that date form the 16th and 17th century is poplar with tourists, highlights being the Cathedral of Lima and the Monastery of San Francisco. Sections of the medieval city wall are still standing and are a good example of fortifications built by the Spanish to defend the city from attack. In October the festival of Lord of Miracles marks the countries most important religious event with a procession from the Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas, a catholic church in the centre of town.
Rent a city break room
The centre of the city is full of hotel accommodation with many good hotels grouped in the districts of Barranco, Miraflores and San Isidro. Budget rooms are hard to find in the city centre where prices are the most expensive in Peru with the exception of Cusco. Accommodation is cheapest during the low season of December to March. For independent traveller who wish to stay in the city centre for their break and experience a more authentic taste of Peruvian life, why not rent a room off a local resident? On the website Wimdu that is exactly what you can do! Search through a list of privately owned apartments available for short-term city breaks.
