Welcome to London

Explore London

London is a global city on a largely provincial island, a perpetual dominion with an inexhaustible, permeating energy unlike any other city in Europe. A noisy, vibrant, multicultural capital and a vivacious metropolis of people, ideas and energy. Few cities accommodate such a variety of cultures, over 300 languages are spoken, all contributing to the culinary offerings, style, and attitude of the number-one tourist destination in the world.

About London

London’s history is a rich chronicle and a compelling biography runs through the city’s landmarks.

  • It is the largest capital city in the European Union, stretching more than 30 miles from east to west.
  • With a population of just under eight million people - London is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world.

Where to Stay

Shaftesbury Avenue, London

There is a great selection of accommodation to choose from when visiting London, so depending on your budget and the area you would like to stay in, you will have the choice of apartments, houses or studio rooms. Central London offers a great selection of studios and spacious apartments where many tourist sites are in walking distance and where you will be in the heart of the city. Transportation in London is very efficient so you can always make it into to the center and back without any problems.

Things to Do

The London Eye next to the Thames

London's variety is reflected in the number of visitors it attracts. The sheer size and scale of London can seem daunting, but the excellent public transport system means that getting around the famous sights is not difficult. London Bridge is a good starting point, heading west along the Thames. A short wander down the South Bank will take you through Borough Market (stop here to try some of the artisan cheese and meats - delicious), past Shakespeare’s Globe and onto the Tate Modern (free to enter and worth a look for the enormous Turbine Hall alone). Check out the iconic London Eye in the distance. Cross over the Millennium Bridge to St Paul’s Cathedral and from here, take the tube west to Marble Arch and relax with a coffee by Hyde Park’s Serpentine. From here, Regents Park, Buckingham Palace and the Natural History Museum are all just a short walk away, and the rest of the day is yours.

Eating and Drinking

Traditional London pub

If you’re looking for a high class meal to start your evening in style, head to the restaurant half way up the Shard, the highest vantage point in Europe (if you travel a bit further to levels 69 and 72 you can see as far as 40 miles away). Or venture into the famous district of South Kensington for a traditional Russian meal at Miri Vanna’s; a hidden gem of a restaurant, where every aspect of the decor including the waitresses uniforms, is traditionally Russian - and the home cooked food is to die for. If you can’t make up your mind, head to Soho where there are seemingly more restaurants than people! Momo is considered to be London’s most glamorous Moroccan restaurant, with a bright and warm atmosphere and food infused with flavour.

Getting Around

View of the London underground

If you're here for more than a couple of days it's worth getting a 'Pay As You Go' Oyster Card for the London public transport system, which gives you a better rate than cash fares and covers all of the trains, buses and tube journeys within London (but not necessarily from the airport). London Underground can be daunting if it’s your first time. There are over 270 stations across the capital, leading right to the outskirts of the city. Once you’ve got the Underground down to a fine art, try to take at least one ride in an iconic black cab - although the fare is not covered by Oyster Card, the drivers are real experts on the city and you'll always get some good tips.
