Los Angeles’ original name was ‘
El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reinade Los Angeles de la Porciuncula’ (Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angeles of the Small Portion’ – a bit of a mouthful!
The ‘Hollywood’ sign used to read ‘Hollywoodland’ when first erected in 1923. In 1976 it was changed by pranksters to read ‘Hollyweed’ – a reference to the city’s ‘hippy’ population.
Los Angelinos went into morning in 1994 when their famous 1,000 year old tree was knocked down in a storm!
Things to do in Los Angeles
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to you to learn that Los Angeles has many great sightseeing opportunities and attractions to visit. The city’s attractions are spread over a large area however so it is wise to factor travelling around into your holiday schedule – seeing everything this city has to offer takes more than a couple of days!
One of the most popular attractions is
Universal Studios which is only ten minutes from Hollywood Boulevard. Universal Studios is the ultimate Hollywood experience – there are thrilling theme park rides, amazing shows, some of LA’s best shops and a real working movie studio. There’s something for all the family here and you’ll find there more than enough things to see and do. If you’re still in a movie mood after visiting Universal Studios, head for Hollywood Boulevard where you will find the
Hollywood Walk of Fame. There are 2,400 brass stars embedded into the pavement and each star has the name of a different actor, musician, director or writer that has made a significant contribution to the world’s entertainment industry.
If you’d like a spectacular view over the City of Angels, the best place to get one is at the
Griffith Observatory, located in Griffith Park at the top of
Mount Hollywood. There are state of the art facilities here and the view is breathtaking. For those who like shopping, the
Rodeo Drive district is well worth a visit and many glamorous shops are located there.
Museums in Los Angeles
There are plenty of world class museums in Los Angeles including the
Getty Centre, which houses and impressive collection of works by artists such
Monet and
Van Gogh. There are also beautiful gardens and the architecture of the Getty Centre building is impressive. If you’d like to visit something a little different and off the beaten track, we recommend you visit the
Nethercutt Museum. It’s loves by those who seek it out, not least because it’s free! The museum has large collection of cars from the 1910s to 1930s and also a large collection of mechanical musical instruments and dolls from the same era.
Getting Around
Los Angeles International Airport LAX is located to the southwest of the city and is 16 miles from the downtown area. The Flyaway operates between LAX and the
San Fernando Valley,
Downtown Los Angeles and
Westside and depending on the traffic the journey takes between 30 and 50 minutes. Unfortunately Los Angeles is not a walking city and once you’ve arrived in the Downtown area you’ll have to get another bus to wherever you want to go. There is also a metro line serving
Hollywood,
Universal City,
Beverly Hills and
Long Beach. If you plan on renting a car be aware of the LA traffic – it’s notoriously bad! Despite LA not being a walking city, there are parts that are nice to explore on foot. The
Santa Monica area is particularly lovely, as is
Sunset Strip,
Hollywood Boulevard and
Old Pasadena. Get your hands on a Thomas Guide, the best map and index available – it’ll help you navigate and you’ll come to rely on it! It is possible to get to
San Francisco from Los Angeles in less than 6 hours and
Las Vegas is less than 4 hours away. Why not visit these cities whilst you’re in the area? The
Joshua Tree National Park is also fairly close to LA if you fancy a change of scene or need a break from LA’s hustle and bustle.
