A true story of underdog success: Manchester began as a small civilian settlement established by the Romans. The city has since seen vast change, with pioneering developments in industry, expansion and social revolution. Abandoned warehouses are now being renovated, old Victorian architecture has received a timely make-over, and the famous Manchester Docklands have had a £200 million restoration; all these developments have added charm to Manchester’s famously gritty cityscape.

No trip to Manchester would be complete without a visit to the legendary Curry Mile, located in South Manchester’s Rushholme area. The road is famous for the number of restaurants specialising in Middle Eastern and South Asian cuisine. A swing through Manchester’s Chinatown is also well worth it - enter through its distinctive dragon archway, and fill up on some reasonably priced dumplings in spicy soup, noodles or dim sum. Getting Around Manchester

Manchester is a very accessible city. You can cover the city centre on foot, or use the ubiquitous yellow trams or local train network. Buses run 24 hours and a weekend pass is reasonably priced. If public transport seems a bit much to deal with at 4am, you will find the local taxi firms are competitive, professional and plentiful. A great deal of the centre is pedestrianised and very flat, so it is also an ideal destination for cyclists. The free Metroshuttle service connects Manchester railway stations, shopping centres and businesses and there are three lines traversing the city centre.
