This is a small but pleasant country house has one bedroom with twin beds, a living room with sofa bed, kitchen and a garden.
It is ideal for two adults and two children or three adults and one child.
The house is situated in the center of Porto da Cruz village that's one of the parishes belonging to the Machico council. Its name came from a cross (cruz) that was placed by the explorers on the bay once used as port (porto). Once you arrive you'll probably think there's nothing much to do around here. Life seems to have stopped or only to be moving very slowly in this place. But, the attractions of this small parish are hidden and you'll have to take a closer look to find them. One of them is the old sugar cane factory, which is still operating the same way, as it was when it started with the sugar production in 1927. It boasts a 26 meter tall tower and when it's working you might even see steam coming out! Also not to be missed is the place known as Penha d'Águia, an imposing rock that separates Porto da Cruz from Faial. Getting up there might be a challenge, as the road is very steep, but the songs of the birds will help you on the way up and once you get there you'll be sure it was definitely worth it. The views from Penha d'Águia are absolutely amazing! Porto da Cruz is also famous for its wine. Known as 'vinho seco americano (dry red wine made of a type of grape called americana), this local product is the theme for a celebration usually happening in September (Festa do Vinho).

The cottage is very cosy, well equipped and comfortable. It is part of a
horse riding school area, with other animals, various lovely gardens and
terraces with mountain- and ocean view. During daytime there we very nice people to take care of the animals (horses, sheep and chicken/birds) but at night we were completely alone on the property, which is 20 minutes walk from the nearest village, Corticeiras.
The owner Fransisco was very welcoming and helpfull: he came to pick us up when we had difficulties finding the address at our arrival. Also on other occasions he
always made sure to make us feel at home.
This 'quinta' is definitely a good choice for people who seek silence, quiet and nature (and comfort at the same time)
Thanks to Francesco we had a great holiday in this Cottage. It is peaceful, very pretty and perfect for two with a child. We found all we need and whenever we had any problem, Francesco was on our side. Next supermarket and restaurants are about five or ten minutes by car. It is some like 20 minutes to Funchal, 40 Minutes to Porto Moniz and 30 minutes to the airport. So it is a good place to discover the island of Madeira. However, in the night you only hear the cicada and the leaves in the eucalyptus forest.
The Banana House was beautiful and provided an excellent base for exploring Madeira. The House is situated in beautiful and historic grounds, in a tourist-free area, with a fabulous swimming pool and a very friendly welcome from the hosts.
The House is very well equipped and benefits from this excellent setting and location. We had a lovely stay. Th Banana House is excellent value for money.
We've just returned from a wonderful week on the beautiful island - we've been many times to Madeira, and fall in love with it all over again every time.
The Villa Vivendi is located in a very nice suburb of Funchal, high on a hill overlooking the city and the sea, and the views, by day and night, are just spectacular. As other reviewers have said, it's very easy to get around by local bus, there is a stop right outside the house, a big plus for the location.
Hint: the no: 8A departs almost hourly, just after the hour on the weekday mornings, for Funchal waterfront, takes only 15 mins and costs €1.95, buy your ticket on the bus.
As regards a negative point on the location - a word of warning, in Funchal you are never far away from traffic, people, barking dogs, day and night, and even up there in Santo Antonio, music from a big local restaurant most evenings. It's great to have the buses so close, car access on good, but steep, roads, places to eat nearby etc, but be advised that the noise could be a problem if you were not expecting it.
The Villa itself is old, though clean and simply furnished, but with plenty of space for 2, 4 or even 6 people. It is value for money when you compare it to the cost of just a room, or self-catering studios etc in the hotel district, and you would never get the fantastic views of the city from that area, anyway.
Hint: take a few small supplies with you if you are arriving later in the day - there is absolutely nothing provided in the kitchen and although the local supermarket is open until 10.00pm it is a long steep climb back up the hill carrying foodstuffs for a snack and/or breakfast.
So, here's hoping you enjoy Madeira as much as we do, and will return to the island many times,
We’ve stayed in the Santo Antonio Villa for a whole month from the end of April to the end of May 2015 and loved it. The house offers plenty of privacy all around and it is situated approximately 300 meters above sea level on a very green western mountain slope. Hundreds of birds meet you with their singing from daybreak until sundown. The view over Funchal from the living and the terrace is amazing. Day and night!
The terrace is sunny from early in morning to the end of the afternoon and later on one can sit in the multi flower covered garden beside or behind the house where there also shady places can be found.
The location is absolutely perfect. There is safe and private parking for one or two rental cars. From three different local bus stops within a couple of minutes walking one can easily reach Funchal any time of day until late in the night by cheap public transport. 8-10 different bus lines that also lead directly to the many touristic spots.
One big supermarket is within walking distance (although up and down a very steep hill) and the other even bigger one is in the Madeira Shopping which can be reached by bus in less than 5 minutes from the nearest bus stop.
Two restaurants, mainly for locals but English spoken, are within walking distance as well and they offer traditional dishes for exceptional low prices.
We experienced two minor problems with the electric and the gas and they were solved immediately by the local agent.
The house itself was well equipped for our month long stay. Beds are comfortable and the chairs in de living room are OK. The house is weekly cleaned by two kind ladies.
No complaint’s then? Not really considering the reasonable price level, the location and the facilities. Early in the season, when the evening and nights are a bit colder so it is important to bring fresh air into the house during the daytime to prevent moisture in the house building up. A couple of times we have used the mobile electric heater in the fresh April evenings.
The bathroom needs modernizing but who cares when there is the use of endless running hot water available which is pleasant for bathing and (manual) dishwashing. We look forward to a next visit.
