This is a small but pleasant country house has one bedroom with twin beds, a living room with sofa bed, kitchen and a garden.
It is ideal for two adults and two children or three adults and one child.
The house is situated in the center of Porto da Cruz village that's one of the parishes belonging to the Machico council. Its name came from a cross (cruz) that was placed by the explorers on the bay once used as port (porto). Once you arrive you'll probably think there's nothing much to do around here. Life seems to have stopped or only to be moving very slowly in this place. But, the attractions of this small parish are hidden and you'll have to take a closer look to find them. One of them is the old sugar cane factory, which is still operating the same way, as it was when it started with the sugar production in 1927. It boasts a 26 meter tall tower and when it's working you might even see steam coming out! Also not to be missed is the place known as Penha d'Águia, an imposing rock that separates Porto da Cruz from Faial. Getting up there might be a challenge, as the road is very steep, but the songs of the birds will help you on the way up and once you get there you'll be sure it was definitely worth it. The views from Penha d'Águia are absolutely amazing! Porto da Cruz is also famous for its wine. Known as 'vinho seco americano (dry red wine made of a type of grape called americana), this local product is the theme for a celebration usually happening in September (Festa do Vinho).

Reviews of this property

I totally agree with all Christin wrote about Haybarn Cottage July 2017.
The place is perfect for all who love natural gardens and animals, especially horses and search for a peaceful place where you feel to be far away from crowded touristic centers but are perfectly near to the main roads to make trips to every place on the island.
In Haybarn Cottage you can have all privacy you wish: especially in the evenings, when the staff is gone, you are completely alone. But anytime you need any help or advice or want to have a nice conversation with someone local, just call Francisco or ask someone of the staff. All people working at the place are extraordinary nice and helpful and Francisco was always ready to give us useful information and good advice for places to see. And he even spent some time with me to answer all my questions about the flowers, trees and other plants of the garden. He speaks English very well.
We were welcomed by Francisco very warmly. He always told us to feel at home at this wonderful place and we really felt like that. When you spent the day near the sea or at sunny and dry places of the island, it is wonderful to come home and find peace and rest in this green little paradise with your own sunny little garden full of its fragrances of flowers.
Don't miss to walk around the area, it is like a big garden with some little gardens inside. You will find a lot of possibilities to sit down and have a rest in beautiful places. You can feel that this piece of land is kept well and looked after with love and understanding of nature.
The view is beautiful, the sky with its scenery of clouds and the atmosphere of light is changing within minutes and you can even see the sea! In the evenings it is impressing to watch the clouds floating up from the sea and sometimes wandering like friendly ghostes through the garden. We made friends with the animals, especially with the cocks and their hens. You can hear them very distant from the Haybarn Cottage, they never woke us up. We slept very well in this cosy little house, surrounded by sounds of nature. Everything was nice and clean and well equipped for the two of us.
As the area is situated in 900m height it is a good idea to bring a Jacket for the evenings and also warm socks or slippers. There is no big problem with mosquitos, but we used an electric mosquito zapper in the nights - you can find it in the supermarket of Jardim da Serra nearby.
In the beginning I was a bit shocked when I saw the steep streets of Madeira, but soon got used to driving there. If you don’t come from f.e. Switzerland and are not used to steep, narrow and often+sharp turned streets, like me, don’t worry: I can assure you, these little cars rented at the airport can do their job very well and it is no problem to go up and down these streets. As soon as you managed to drive your way up to Haybarn Cottage, you have passed the tourist-driver-exam and will be prepared very well for the rest of the island ;-)
The way from the airport is very easy to find, if you leave the express highway at exit 5 and then just follow the signs to "Estreito da camera", "Jardim da Serra" and "Centro Hipico". Google maps might be a good help to find your ways on Madeira, but don't trust it to much, it once told us to go up a stairway....
This is an exceptionally beautiful place on earth and we really felt at home in this cosy cottage with its lovely little, private garden and we also enjoyed very much the surrounding area with all its animals and plants. This place is cared for with such an amount of love and commitment that every single corner seems to contribute to the spirit of this place as if it had a soul of its own. However, we soon realised that the special spirit of this place is inseparable linked to our host Francisco. And in the same manner as he cares for this place, he cares for all its inhabitants. We felt more welcome than a guest could actually feel. Additionally he offered so many times advice and help - each time it was worth gold. He always exactly knew what his guests might be in use of: a supermarket, a place for lunch, a place for dinner, special places to visit etc. He even supplied us with delicoious herbs for cooking from his garden. Especially we loved the evenings in front of our little cottage enjoying the beautiful view and the stars above and just as much having breakfast in the sun - delicious bread was delivered every morning.
The cottage is very cosy, well equipped and comfortable. It is part of a
horse riding school area, with other animals, various lovely gardens and
terraces with mountain- and ocean view. During daytime there we very nice people to take care of the animals (horses, sheep and chicken/birds) but at night we were completely alone on the property, which is 20 minutes walk from the nearest village, Corticeiras.
The owner Fransisco was very welcoming and helpfull: he came to pick us up when we had difficulties finding the address at our arrival. Also on other occasions he
always made sure to make us feel at home.
This 'quinta' is definitely a good choice for people who seek silence, quiet and nature (and comfort at the same time)
Thanks to Francesco we had a great holiday in this Cottage. It is peaceful, very pretty and perfect for two with a child. We found all we need and whenever we had any problem, Francesco was on our side. Next supermarket and restaurants are about five or ten minutes by car. It is some like 20 minutes to Funchal, 40 Minutes to Porto Moniz and 30 minutes to the airport. So it is a good place to discover the island of Madeira. However, in the night you only hear the cicada and the leaves in the eucalyptus forest.
