See Alfama on a Segway with these Lisbon Segway Tours!
Viewpoint in Alfama Alfama is Lisbon's most emblematic quarter and one of the most rewarding for walkers and photographers thanks to its medieval alleys and outstanding views.
Because its foundation is dense bedrock, it survived the 1755 earthquake, and a walk through this old-fashioned residential neighborhood is now a step back in time. It is a village within a city still made up of narrow streets, tiny squares, churches, and whitewashed houses with tile panels and wrought-iron balconies adorned with pots of flowers, drying laundry, and caged birds.
It was settled by the Romans and Visigoths (it was also an important Jewish quarter in the 15th century), but it was the Moors who gave the district its atmosphere and name (alhama means springs or bath, a reference to the hot springs found in the area). They were also responsible for its web of streets created as a defense system, while at the same time enabling their homes to remain cool in the summer.
Alfama alley Most of the older residents have lived here all their lives and retain a strong sense of community, although their rent-controlled homes are now dilapidated, and an increasing number of wealthier people are investing in their properties and moving in.
Alfama has influenced poets and novelists, and although Bairro Alto is the city's traditional Fado quarter, it is Alfama that has always been the inspiration for Fado songs, and is becoming just as popular with Fado Houses.
The district has an intangible quality that needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated, and the best way to get to know it is to get a little lost (something almost impossible to avoid), and wander around admiring the postcard-perfect views, visiting the churches, and walking up to the castle for the most breathtaking panorama of the city and the greatest sunsets.
Contrasting with these timeless images is a trendy modern development by the waterfront across from Santa Apolonia train station. It houses stylish design shops, restaurants, and one of Europe's top clubs, "Lux."

Reviews of this property
We had a wonderful time in Lisboa. The appartement is in the middle of Alfama. Everything you need is available. What is missing, you can buy directly in the mini-supermarket in the next street. A lot of restaurants are near, so you can try a lot of typical portuguese food. Train and metro station is about 10 minutes away, so you can explore the city. The appartement is recommendable. Only the bed squeaks a little. We will come back.
Nice appartment in the heart of the colourful Alfama.
Nice welcome by Pedro who came to pick us up at the airport.
Perfect appartment, very clean and all you need for a pleasant stay. It's big enoughfor 2 persons, for 4 persons is too small I think. There can be some noice in the area so bring your earplugs. There are some pleasant restaurants in the neighbourhood. Transport from Martin Moniz is good till 20. 15 ( weekend) or 20.45 (workingdays). After that it is a steep walk for 15 min.
The host is perfect, flexibel, quick respons by app or mail
Recommend this apartment in a authenthick area.
The apartment is located in a typical street of Alfama. You can reach the Metro station Martim Moniz by foot within 10 minutes (just down the hill). From Martim Moniz to the apartment there is a tram (12E) you can take to climb the hill up to the apartment. From Martim Moniz you can also easily reach a supermarket by foot. There are several small "Frutarias" near the apartment to buy water and fruits. Near the apartment there are also several small cafes.
The apartment itself was nice. In the kitchen you could finde everything you need. In the kitchen and in the bedroom there were large windows. It was possible to close the window shutters, so you didn't hear any noise from the outside at night. Unfortunately the beds squeaked a bit, Although it is allowed to smoke at the open window there isn't any cigarette smell in the apartement.
Ana is very friendly, She answers quickly and helps you with any problems you might have.
Ana es muy buena anfitriona y muy agradable. El apartamento estupendo y el barrio nos gustó mucho.
La única observación es que nos hubiese gustado saber antes que se pagaban diez euros de tasa de turismo al ayuntamiento.
We had nice days in Lisboa, Ana was very friendly and her flat was beautyfull for our stay. In the Alfama, you can go to every place and dont need any transportation, nice restaurants close to the accomodation- I can recommand this adress! Thank you, Ana!
Accueil très sympathique de la part d'Ana.
Appartement très bien placé à 150 m d'une des plus belles vues d'Alfama, les Portas do Sol. Très bien équipé.
The flat was immaculate and very homely. Everything we needed was at hand. It is well situated for transport and restaurants, in the heart of beautiful Alfama. The shower was fantastic and I could not recommend higher, I hope to come back soon. Ana, the host was very helpful and very easy to communicate with, all round 10/10
