Breathtaking views and a medieval maze; the village within a city; the historical soul of Lisbon
See Alfama on a Segway with these Lisbon Segway Tours!
Viewpoint in Alfama Alfama is Lisbon's most emblematic quarter and one of the most rewarding for walkers and photographers thanks to its medieval alleys and outstanding views.
Because its foundation is dense bedrock, it survived the 1755 earthquake, and a walk through this old-fashioned residential neighborhood is now a step back in time. It is a village within a city still made up of narrow streets, tiny squares, churches, and whitewashed houses with tile panels and wrought-iron balconies adorned with pots of flowers, drying laundry, and caged birds.
It was settled by the Romans and Visigoths (it was also an important Jewish quarter in the 15th century), but it was the Moors who gave the district its atmosphere and name (alhama means springs or bath, a reference to the hot springs found in the area). They were also responsible for its web of streets created as a defense system, while at the same time enabling their homes to remain cool in the summer.
Alfama alley Most of the older residents have lived here all their lives and retain a strong sense of community, although their rent-controlled homes are now dilapidated, and an increasing number of wealthier people are investing in their properties and moving in.
Alfama has influenced poets and novelists, and although Bairro Alto is the city's traditional Fado quarter, it is Alfama that has always been the inspiration for Fado songs, and is becoming just as popular with Fado Houses.
The district has an intangible quality that needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated, and the best way to get to know it is to get a little lost (something almost impossible to avoid), and wander around admiring the postcard-perfect views, visiting the churches, and walking up to the castle for the most breathtaking panorama of the city and the greatest sunsets.
Contrasting with these timeless images is a trendy modern development by the waterfront across from Santa Apolonia train station. It houses stylish design shops, restaurants, and one of Europe's top clubs, "Lux."

We had nice days in Lisboa, Ana was very friendly and her flat was beautyfull for our stay. In the Alfama, you can go to every place and dont need any transportation, nice restaurants close to the accomodation- I can recommand this adress! Thank you, Ana!
The flat was immaculate and very homely. Everything we needed was at hand. It is well situated for transport and restaurants, in the heart of beautiful Alfama. The shower was fantastic and I could not recommend higher, I hope to come back soon. Ana, the host was very helpful and very easy to communicate with, all round 10/10
the apartement was realy nice, clean and orderly, the welcome wine was also very good. ;) thx a lot again :)
Apartment very clean and welcoming. Good choice for those who want to enjoy Alfama.
Apartamento muy limpio y acogedor. Buena elección para los que quieren disfrutar de Alfama.
Ana is very friendly and helpful. We got the keys without any problems, although we were delayed badly.
The apartment is very nice and at a good location.
we stayed there with 3 persons and we would come back any time.
Great apartment in a lovely area easily accessible. Welcoming host. A nice stay in the heart of Lisbon
Very nice appartment with enough space, for us it was ideally located between Barrio Alto and Belem. Also busses, trams and S-Bahn type railways (not on weekends) are within walking distance. So, no Problem that the Apartment is not located directly in the city centre (by the way, we walked (!) several times back from Barrio Alto to the apartment); at least in our view the location is an advantage. - And not to forget to mention: Also Ana is very kind.
