Munich is the proud capital of the Free State of Bavaria. With some 1.35 million inhabitants, it is the largest city in Bavaria and Germany's third largest city. Apart from the largest folk festival in the world, the Oktoberfest, Munich has many more attractions to offer its visitors. Almost everybody, for example, has heard of the Hofbräuhaus. The famous beer hall on Platzl in the old town is well attended throughout the year. Not far from there is the Viktualienmarkt, one of the places where the locals like to hang out. Munich's stalwarts meet here in the beer garden for the morning pint and the chef of the gourmet restaurants buys his ingredients in the market stalls.
There are many other main attractions right in the center: the Frauenkirche with the onion domes and the panoramic views is Munichs landmark, the city hall in the Gothic Revival architectural style towers (do not miss the chimes at 11 and 12 clock) right at the beautiful Marienplatz, the Alter Peter offers visitors that will climb the 306 steps to the top a breathtaking view to the Zugspitze on clear days. Behind the Karlstor and Stachus extends Munich's old town including the shopping street with the highest turnover in Germany. For fans of machinery and equipment, this is a must: the German Museum on Museum Island in the Isar. It is the most visited museum in the Republic. Art lovers visit the galleries of the art premises in Munich.
The people of Munich love the River Isar and you can tell they do by all the lively urban green space along the riverbank. You get to swim, picnic and BBQ. If the Isar leads high water you can even surf in some places, but it is best watching this spectacle from the bank. Built for the 1972 Olympic Games is the Olympic Park, with its distinctive glass architecture is another recreational center of the city. The castle of the Bavarian Rulers, the Wittelsbach also deserves to be discovered. It is one of the magnificent buildings of the dynasty.
