Bude is a small town with big possibilities. Hikers, horseback riders, surfers and swimmers flock to the sunny, clean beaches and wild coastlines. Bude Castle, a manor house overlooking Summerleaze Beach, was built by inventor Sir Goldsworthy Gurney in 1830. He was the first man to make a long journey in a mechanical vehicle when he rode a steam coach from London to Bath and back. Today, the building houses the Town Hall and the attractive grounds are used for concerts and festivals in the summer. The castle also houses the Bude Heritage Centre. There is an exhibition about Bude's fascinating geology and history. The new visitor centre in Crescent Park is also worth a visit. There is also an extensive exhibition from the North Cornwall Heritage Coast. Beneath the cliffs of Summerleaze Downs is the Bude Sea Pool, an outdoor swimming pool for those who prefer to avoid the waves in the Atlantic. It is therefore particularly suitable for families. In addition to various other sports and entertainment facilities, there is also an indoor leisure centre in Bude. A little further along the coast is Sandy Mouth, an ideal family resort with beautiful sandy beaches and many rock pools.
