Holiday lettings in Gozo

Gozo offers a large variety of accommodation. With Wimdu you will find everything from apartments to renovated farmhouses, villas and much more. Many properties have pools and sea views and all benefit from the 300 days of sunshine per year. You can choose to stay in the capital, Victoria, which stands in the middle of the island. Northwest of the island is Gharb, one of the oldest villages. The village was historically and still is inhabited by fishermen, farmers and craftsmen, and both the Blue Hole and the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary are close by. Xlendi, Southwest of the island, is the perfect place to stay if you are a beach, sea or snorkelling lover. Staying in Xaghra, Northeast of Victoria, is a good choice as this is where you will find the famous Ġgantija temples and the red sandy beach of Ramla Bay. Finally the Southeast village of Qala offers wonderful views over its neighbouring island of Comino.

Gozo is home to one of the most incredible diving spots: the Blue Hole. However there are a great number of other diving spots suitable for all levels. Surrounded by the sea, Gozo offers a great number of boat tours which allow visitors to enjoy the island from the outside, getting to know its steep and rocky cliffs and countless caves. Go to Mgarr and take a private boat to visit the sister island of Comino and its famous Blue Lagoon. For thrill seekers, Gozo offers the radical experiences of climbing, abseiling, biking and hiking. Furthermore the island offers three landmarks that are worth a visit: the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary in Gharb, a pilgrimage site, and the Ġgantija temples in Xaghra, a UNESCO heritage site consisting of two ‘giant’ temples dating from 3000 B.C, and the Citadel at the top of Victoria, with a breathtaking view over the whole island.

As you’re in a Mediterranean country, expect a healthy combination of natural produce including olive oil, tomatoes and garlic as basic ingredients, not to mention a lot of fish. The food has several influences from past settlers, from Italy to North Africa. For a snack try a Ftira, which looks like a Pizza whose topping can be tomato, anchovy, caper and potato or alternatively try Gbejniet, a local cheese made of goat or sheep. Then try pastizzi, plural for a mini-pastry, filled with ricotta and mushy peas. In terms of beverages, you should certainly sample the Maltese coffee which is very strong and flavoured with rosewater and cloves. Alternatively you can sample a local beverage called Ruġġata, which is a kind of almond milk or a soft-drink called Kinnie, which is composed of anis and ginseng. For dinner, head to the Azure Window Wine Bar and Restaurant which has fabulous views over the Dwejra inland dive site.

The island of Gozo measures a positively petite 26 square miles. In light of this, car rental is always going to be an easy option. As the last settlers were the British, in Gozo the locals drive on the left. Malta’s public transport networks are cheap and comfortable. There are several ticket options, from single to daily to 7-day and the Explore Card. Single fares are more expensive during the summer (€2 per journey), and the Explore Card starts at €21 per adult, with a discount for children. You can also rent scooters, motorbikes and bikes on arrival in Mgarr. The price varies depending on the number of rented days, it starts around €8 for a bicycle for 4 days or more. On Gozo, you can also find white taxis as in Malta but they are quite expensive compared to other forms of public transport. Finally a very good way to visit the whole island is the hop off hop on bus that costs around €18.
