Known as the ‘gateway to the highlands’, Inverness is the administrative and commercial hub of this vast and beautiful part of the United Kingdom. Yet to dismiss the place as a steppingstone to the beautiful countryside does this fast-growing city a great injustice. Inverness has a long history and was the scene of many medieval battles. Inverness is home to the highlands’, and perhaps even Scotland’s, most famous attraction the highland games, a unique cultural event that celebrates Celtic and Scottish culture and heritage. Bed and breakfast in inverness are in good supply, although more and more holiday makers are also choosing apartments as their accommodation choice for the city. Many travelers also visit the major Scottish cities on the way up to inverness, you can also check out our many bed and breakfasts in Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Where to Stay

Inverness’ excellent location in the Scottish highlands makes it the perfect city to explore the British countryside. Just 30 minutes form the city lies Loch Ness, one of the most famous lakes in the world, it is believed that within the lake lies a monster, names the Loch Ness monster or Nessie for short. Thousands of travelers visit the site everyday hoping to capture a glimpse of the elusive beast. Just over an hour’s drive brings you to Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain, this area is frequented by hikers and skiers and has exceptional natural beauty. After experiencing the Scottish highlands all day, a warm and comfortable bed and breakfast is an essential need for the evening. Wimdu has plenty of bed and breakfasts in inverness and the surrounding villages, Wimdu also lists plenty of apartments in the city centre. If you would prefer a cottage in a more remote area then check out apartments in Scotland on Wimdu' interactive map.

Your holiday home in Inverness: Picturesque town near Loch Ness

Inverness lies at the outlet of the Loch Ness into the Beauly Firth. Buildings with hints of Renaissance, Palladian or Georgian architecture, cosy rustic brick dwellings and stone cottages characterise the image of the town and the region. Close to the sea and large lakes, Inverness is surrounded by a picturesque landscape.

  • The taste of Scotland

The Scottish Highlands are considered an El Dorado for gourmets. Unusual, but extremely tasty is the hearty variant, for example with haddock or smoked herring. In the evening, try a juicy steak from Highland Cattle with fresh wild mushrooms. To round off the meal, try Cairnsmore, a delicately nutty sheep's milk cheese.

  • Discover the most beautiful sights on holiday with holiday apartment in Inverness

    Loch Ness

When visitors think of Scotland, the first things that come to mind are the Highlands and the Loch Ness sea monster. Those who book a holiday apartment in Inverness can search for the mysterious creature themselves - or simply take long walks along the shores of the almost 40-kilometre-long lake.

    Inverness Castle

If your accommodation is in Inverness city centre, you may be looking up at the mid-19th-century Victorian Revival-style castle. Built on the ruins of its medieval predecessor, it now serves as a courthouse and administrative building.

    St. Andrew's Cathedral

Start from your accommodation in Inverness for a visit to St. Andrew's Cathedral, a quintessentially Scottish church in Neo-Gothic style. While there, note the ornate figures on the walls and the baptismal font by sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.

    Abertarff House

Visit the small shop in the city's oldest secular building. The Lovat family's town palace dates back to 1592.

    Old High Church

Even older is this church building on Mount St. Michael's by the Riverside. The tower of the Gothic building is particularly worth a visit.
