Welcome to Playa de las Américas
Discover Playa de las Américas
Located in southern Tenerife, Playa de las Américas is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. Also known as the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’, Tenerife enjoys a warm tropical climate with average temperatures of 18-24 °C in winter and 24-28°C in summer.
Explore Playa de las Américas
The local beaches of Playa de las Américas are what draw many tourists to the area, and are made up of black volcanic sand. Despite being on the same latitude as the Sahara Desert, Tenerife is cooled by the cold sea currents of the Canary Islands.
Where to Stay
Playa de las Américas was created in the 1960s adjacent to the nearby town of Los Cristianos as a purpose-built holiday resort for the island. It lies in the southern-west part of the Municipality of Arona. Wherever you stay in Playa de las Américas, you’ll be well placed to reach all of the most sought-out areas of the neighbourhood on foot. Public transport connections are also sufficient to allow you to reach all areas of the island. If you want to be close to some of the best beaches on the island, you would be well placed nearer to Los Cristianos, where golden sand has been imported to create a classic beach landscape. If you’re more interested in being close to the buzzing nightlife that Playa de las Américas is famed for, you may prefer to stay in the area around Calle Mexico and Avenue Las Américas.
Things to do
When staying in or around Playa de las Américas, you’ll find a wealth of attractions to explore and fun things to do. Of course, there are the beautiful beaches where you can soak up the rays and take home a beautiful golden tan, but if you’re interested in more energetic activities and excursions there’s a lot on offer. Why not pay a visit to the Loro Parque Zoo and Aquarium? The park is home to killer whales, dolphins, gorillas, tigers and giant tortoises. Visitors can enjoy workshops, and displays - there are dozens of fun-filled family adventures on offer. If that’s not enough, you can always go on an exciting Submarine Safari, and have the opportunity to see exotic fish, stingrays and barracudas in their natural habitat. The submarine sinks to a depth of 30 metres and a team of divers attract the surrounding wildlife by scattering food for shoals of fish. Visitors can see all the action through the giant portholes.
Eating and Drinking
Drinking and eating out in Playa de las Americas is an easy affair, with the area boasting more restaurants and bars per square metre than any other part of the island. The area is the nightlife capital of the island, and there’s a lot going on at all times. There are many magnificent establishments to be found, boasting an array of different cuisines - so there’s something for everyone regardless of your personal tastes. If you want to explore the nightlife on offer too, then you’ve definitely come to the right place. You’ll find everything from cabaret and karaoke bars to electronic dance clubs. If want to experience a beachfront party then head to the Papagayo Beach Club, reputedly the island’s most chic beachfront party venue. If you want an intimate soulful setting the the Soul Suite offers live soul and Motown performances. The Los Reunidos tapas bar and restaurant is also well worth checking out.
Getting Around
If you want to get around Tenerife and you’re staying in Playa de las Americas then you only really have two options to choose from: taxis or buses. Taxis are by far the most convenient option, but are also understandably the most expensive. Cabs in Tenerife are usually white, and there are fixed fares that depend on the journey length. While you’re unlikely to get ripped off on your route, it is always worth checking these out to ensure that you know more or less how much you should be paying for your trip. Tenerife buses are run by a company known as the Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife, Sociedad Anónima (TITSA). If you plan to use the public transport a lot during your stay, you might be better off buying a Bono card from the bus station to save money rather than paying individual fares. Couples can share Bono cards by inserting the card twice in the ticket machine.
