About Playa del Inglés
Situated in the southern part of the island of Gran Canaria, nature has been kind to Playa del Inglés:
* On average the temperature is 24ºC; the coldest days in January only drop as low as 17ºC.
* Wildlife and nature lovers should know that nearly half of the entire island is considered a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.
Where to stay
Playa del Inglés has been welcoming travelers from all over the world for a long time now and the 1960s saw a big investment in the hospitality sector. This means that both local residents and businesses have a history of dealing with tourists. Although a relatively small location, it offers its guests a wide range of places to stay: from self-catered apartments overlooking the sea and typically local houses that have been in the same family for generations, to larger housing complexes equipped with all sorts of amenities - your options are many. It isn’t uncommon for local residents to rent out their villas to travellers who wish for a more homely experience. The neighbouring town of Maspalomas is just around the corner and compliments the sea-facing community of Playa del Inglés very nicely. Great accommodation options can be found here as well.
Things to do
There is no end to the activities Playa del Inglés has to offer. No matter what your particular tastes are, you will surely find something that suits them. For those who enjoy the seaside, there’s always the option to turn to the great beach that lends its name to the location where a number of watersports and activities are available. From scuba diving to jet skiing to simply sunbathing on the golden sand, the waterfront is the go-to choice of many. When you step away from the beach, why not follow one of the nearby hiking trails? Playa del Inglés boasts a diverse landscape and stunning views of the surrounding area that are just a quick trek or bike ride away. The nearby dunes are one place that should not be missed. A very multicultural place, guests can find amenities everywhere, such as a thriving nightlife, and also other nice destinations at a near distance.
Where to eat
Gran Canaria is home to a perfect culinary storm - with local dishes influenced by cultures ranging from Spain to neighbouring African countries. The whole bounty of the sea is right at its shore also so it is no wonder that eating in Playa del Inglés is a wonderful experience. Restaurants by the shore get their ingredients from nearby markets which means that fresh fish and seafood is always on the menu. Some restaurants will even have fishing boats working for them who deliver the fish straight from the sea and into the kitchen. It pays off to go to the small, offbeat eateries to sample caldo de pescado (fish soup - the kind of fish depends on the season) or the hearty ropa vieja (a beef and chicken mix with potatoes and chickpeas). There is no shortage of places to enjoy a meal in Playa del Inglés, and venturing into Maspalomas will expand your options as well.
You can easily walk from one place to the other around Playa del Inglés. With so many points of interest in a relatively small area, you really don't have to go more than a couple of steps without finding something new. The island has a network of buses at your service which are grouped by colour according to the routes they take: yellow buses operate within a city or town; teal or bluish buses take passengers between locations, and red buses take touristic routes around the island. The international airport on Gran Canaria has many options for travel but to get straight to Playa del Inglés you can take the 66 or 90 buses. However, if your arrival is after 8:30pm, odds are that the bus service is already over for the day. In this case, there are always taxis stationed outside the arrival gates and car rental services are also available.
